Your Donations Help Provide Wonderful Things!
The goal of the Eckstein Band Program is to provide the highest quality band experience for all of our band students. At Eckstein Middle School, our philosophy is that no student be denied the opportunity to participate in an activity due to personal lack of funds.
Your donations help support the daily operational needs of all the Eckstein bands and vocal groups, in addition to supporting the need to replace and repair a limited amount of band-owned and student-used instruments. There are many ways everyone in the Eckstein band community can help to keep our band and vocal programs at such high standards while being accessible for all students. Your contributions of time, money and musical instruments help to bridge the gap between the band's annual budget and the actual needs. Our success is very much dependent upon our community and we are extremely grateful for all of your contributions!
How Can I Help?
Please make your $25 Lab Donation to the band early in September. Return your payment to Eckstein Band to the secured mail box in the Band Room as soon as you can to help with budgeting and planning.
Consider an additional contribution for instrument support. Make your donations to Friends of Eckstein Band, 3003 NE 75th St., Seattle, WA 98115. Donations made online through the Alliance for Education or by check to "AFE - Eckstein PTSA Band Campaign" are tax-deductible, tax ID no. 91-1508191. If you make a contribution online, please be sure to indicate "Eckstein PTSA Band Campaign" in the Individual School field so that the fund will be directed to Eckstein Band. The Alliance for Education (AFE) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Check with your employer to see if they participate in a contribution matching program. Many employers will match part or all of your contribution. What an easy way to help generate more support for the band! Consider one of many volunteer opportunities available. There are a wide range of band volunteer opportunities to support many family and parent situations --- one-time or recurring activities; evening/weekend or during the school day; officer, committee chairperson or committee support; chaperoning; bake sales, raffle baskets, etc. Questions? Please contact one of the band directors, officers or volunteer coordinators. Consider attending the monthly band parent meeting on the first Monday night of every month.
What are the Band’s Operational Needs?
The School District funds less than $1 per band student for our music programs --- less than $500 a year, in total, for nine Eckstein bands and vocal groups with more than 500 students.
What does the Lab Donation support?
About 75% of our band expenses are spent on repairs, supplies and music directly benefiting every student in every band and vocal group. The majority of the band-owned instruments are used on a daily basis (e.g., piano, drum sets, bass, tubas, etc.). These instruments require periodic repairs and maintenance including repairs for broken or poorly working parts (e.g., keys, stings, slides), along with instrument cleaning and piano tuning. A wide variety of necessary band expenses benefit all band members, such as event registration fees, sheet music, reeds, mouth pieces, music stands, pencils, even paper and printer cartridges.
Another 25% is spent on substitutes for Mr. E and Mr. Rowe for the school days when they are at band and vocal events, student awards and recognitions at year end, and office supplies and stamps, etc.
What other band revenues are generated to support band and vocal expenses?
Band parents/guardians and students generate about $6,000 every year through bake sales, basket raffles, band t-shirts/sweatshirts and band gigs.
What is NOT supported by the Lab Donation?
The Lab Donation does not support transportation, lodging or food costs for individual band or vocal field trips. Costs for each field trip are allocated to band and vocal members and are collected prior to the field trip.
Scholarships are funded by other donations, not the Lab Donation.
What are the Band’s Instrument Needs?
Our award-winning band teachers and students strive for excellence in music. Right now, our students are using old pianos that can't be restrung, euphoniums that are fixed with duct tape, broken French horns and saxophones. In short, many of our band-owned instruments are worn out and many new instruments are needed as our band student participation grows. New chairs and chair racks, sheet music, computers and music technology equipment are also needed for Eckstein to keep pace with the programs at other Seattle Schools.
What were the results of the 2007 – 2008 Instruments For Kids Campaign?
In 2007-2008, the band successfully raised more than $25,000 through the Instruments for Kids Campaign. This exceptional support helped kick off the badly needed instrument replacement program. With the generous donations, the band was able to purchase a set of tubular bells, a string bass, two baritone saxes, a tenor trombone, a bass trombone, two tubas and two double french horns. Although good progress was made in replacing some instruments, the need for instrument replacement continues every year due to the huge number of kids benefiting from the band program and the variety and depth of the program.
What is on the Current Instrument Replacement Wish List?
We still need 2 pianos, 2 french horns, 2 bassoons, 2 bass clarinets, 2 tubas, 2 tenor saxophones, 2 baritone saxophones, 1 jazz drum set, 2 clarinets, 3 snare drums, 4 piccolos, 1 bass flute, 2 euphoniums, 1 hard bass case, mallets, marimbas, microphones, and much, much more.
What are the Current Sources of Instrument Support?
In addition to a small portion of the Lab Donation allocated toward instrument purchase, repair and maintenance, the band gratefully accepts generous contributions from parents, employer-matching programs, others in the Eckstein community and from the PTSA/EAC for instruments.
Additionally, donations, in kind, of instruments are greatly appreciated. Please contact one of the band directors if you have a possible instrument donation.
Our kids are inspired by your generous support!
